A historic Bedfordshire village with a strong community, open countryside and easy access to Dunstable, Leighton Buzzard and the Chilterns. Find out what makes Eaton Bray such a popular place to live.
Eaton Bray is a popular and historic Bedfordshire village around three miles west of Dunstable and a short drive south-east of Leighton Buzzard. Close to the Buckinghamshire border, it combines traditional village character and countryside with convenient access to larger towns.
The village is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, and its name is thought to combine the Old English for a farm by a river with that of Sir Reginald Bray, whose family was associated with the manor. St Mary’s Church dates back to the early 13th century, the historic core is a designated Conservation Area and there are many listed buildings throughout the village.
Homes range from traditional cottages and period properties in the historic centre to family houses, larger detached homes and modern housing on the outskirts, with around 78 further dwellings planned in the parish up to March 2030.
Despite its rural setting, Eaton Bray has a strong community and a range of local amenities, with the Market Square and High Street at the heart of village life. The White Horse on Market Square is one of the village’s established pubs, while the historic Coffee Tavern on the High Street is another distinctive local building.
There is also a village hall, local clubs and groups, and events throughout the year. St Mary’s Village Carnival, shared with neighbouring Edlesborough, is one of the highlights of the local calendar.
Closer to home there are green spaces and recreation areas including Eaton Bray Park, while the National Trust’s Dunstable Downs and Whipsnade Estate and Whipsnade Zoo are within easy reach.
Eaton Bray has its own primary school, Eaton Bray Academy, on School Lane in the heart of the village. It takes children from age 2 to 11, including its preschool, and serves Eaton Bray and the surrounding area.
Older pupils attend secondary schools in neighbouring towns and villages, and families have access to a wider range of schools in Dunstable, Luton, Leighton Buzzard and the surrounding villages.
Eaton Bray sits between several larger towns. Dunstable is around three miles away and Leighton Buzzard is a short drive, giving residents access to a wider range of shops, restaurants, employment and leisure facilities. Local bus services also connect the village with surrounding communities.
For commuters, the A5 and the nearby M1 provide road links towards London and the Midlands. The nearest railway stations are Leighton Buzzard and Cheddington, on the West Coast Main Line to London Euston, while Luton and Luton Airport Parkway offer Thameslink services.
London, Milton Keynes, Luton and Aylesbury are all within reach, making Eaton Bray an appealing choice for a quieter village life without being cut off from major employment centres.
