Historic village living in the Vale of Aylesbury, with a close-knit community, open countryside and easy access to Aylesbury, Winslow and Milton Keynes. Discover what makes Whitchurch a great place to call home.
Whitchurch is a historic Buckinghamshire village on the A413, around five miles north of Aylesbury and a short drive south of Winslow. Surrounded by farmland and footpaths in the Vale of Aylesbury, it combines traditional village character with convenient access to larger towns.
The village is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, and the earthworks of Bolebec Castle, a medieval motte and bailey castle, survive as a scheduled monument. Whitchurch was granted a market charter in 1245, the Grade II* listed Church of St John the Evangelist dates back to the 13th century, and the historic core is a Conservation Area containing 47 listed buildings.
Homes range from timber-framed and thatched cottages and period houses along the High Street, Market Hill and Oving Road to 20th-century and more modern family homes on the edges of the village.
For a village of its size, Whitchurch is well served for everyday needs. There is a village shop and Post Office at the service station on the High Street, a GP surgery on Oving Road and Parrott Bros, a family-run butcher and farm shop at Beechmoor Farm. The White Swan, a part-thatched 16th-century pub on the High Street, is the last of the village’s historic inns and a popular spot for a drink or a meal.
Community life centres on St John’s Village Hall, the Methodist Church and Hall and the cricket ground, while The Meadows recreation area has a children’s play area, an outdoor gym, a fitness trail and a community orchard. The Whitchurch & Creslow Community Association organises events for the village through the year.
A network of footpaths leads out across the surrounding countryside and links into the Aylesbury Ring, while the National Trust’s Waddesdon Manor is a short drive away. Aylesbury and Milton Keynes offer further shopping and leisure.
Whitchurch has its own primary school, Whitchurch Combined School on North Marston Lane, which takes children aged 4 to 11 from the village and surrounding area. At its most recent inspection in 2024, Ofsted confirmed that it continues to be a good school.
Buckinghamshire operates a selective system, with children able to sit the Secondary Transfer Test for a grammar school place. Whitchurch falls within the catchment areas for The Aylesbury Vale Academy in Berryfields, an all-through school with a sixth form, and for Aylesbury Grammar School, Aylesbury High School and Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School in Aylesbury.
Families also have access to a wider choice of schools in Aylesbury, Winslow and Buckingham. We recommend checking catchment areas and admissions arrangements with each school and Buckinghamshire Council.
The A413 runs through the village as its High Street, linking Whitchurch with Aylesbury to the south and Winslow and Buckingham to the north. From Aylesbury, the A41 continues towards Bicester and the M40 in one direction and Tring, Hemel Hempstead and the M25 in the other, while Milton Keynes is around 15 miles away. The X60 bus connects the village with Aylesbury, Winslow and Buckingham.
Aylesbury and Aylesbury Vale Parkway stations are both around five miles away by road, with Chiltern Railways trains to London Marylebone taking from around an hour. Leighton Buzzard, around eight miles away, and Milton Keynes Central offer West Coast Main Line services to London Euston, with the fastest trains taking around 30 to 35 minutes.
